MECHANIC "A"
Pay Grade A34
Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs complex troubleshooting and preventive and remedial maintenance of revenue and non-revenue vehicles and equipment; performs other related duties. |
Classification Characteristics
Mechanic A is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Mechanic A Leader (ATU) in that a Mechanic A performs complex troubleshooting and preventive and remedial maintenance of revenue and non-revenue vehicles and equipment; performs other related duties while a Mechanic A Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Mechanic A s and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Mechanic A Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
Mechanic "A" is the journey-level classification within the Mechanic career ladder, while Mechanic "B" is the intermediate classification and Mechanic "C" is the entry-level classification within the series. Duties among the three classification vary according to complexity. |

Examples of Duties
- Performs of coach vehicle malfunctions, determines the probable cause, and recommends necessary remedial action to Leader or Supervisor for prioritization and assignment

Repairs or removes and replaces dysfunctional components of major coach systems including, but not limited to, wheelchair lifts and air-conditioning units

Removes and replaces entire engine packages

Overhauls and tunes diesel and gasoline engines

Performs acceptance testing and pre-service preparations to newly acquired coaches

Operates brake lathe machine and performs brake reline overhauls

Repairs minor damage to interior or exterior of coach including, but not limited to, torn seats, broken windows and windshields, minor dents, and cosmetic paint damage

Responds to road failure situations and renders remedial action to return bus to the operating division

Disassembles, cleans, inspects, and rebuilds engine systems and their mechanical and electrical components

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Advanced methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in the maintenance and repair of transit vehicles, automobiles, other non-revenue equipment and all their major systems

Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
- Perform advanced troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of transit vehicles

Read electrical schematics

Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment

Safely operate buses, tow trucks, and other Metro vehicles

Follow oral and written instructions

Lift and move objects weighing up to 80 pounds

Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe

Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the MECHANIC "A" position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 4 years' experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic with at least 2 years as a bus mechanic

Successful completion of a six month full-time training program from an accredited school in automotive/truck maintenance and repair may be substituted for up to 2 years non-bus experience performing repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of rail rapid transit vehicles utilizing digital electronics and microprocessors

Current and verifiable full ASE (H) Series Transit Certifications in H1-CNG, H3-Drive Train, H4-Brakes, H5-Suspension/Steering, H6-Electrical/Electronics is desirable

Valid California Class A driver's license

Special Conditions
- Must be able to work on any one of the shifts, including weekends

Must provide own tools of the trade

Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
