MECHANIC "A"
Pay Grade A34

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs complex troubleshooting and preventive and remedial maintenance of revenue and non-revenue vehicles and equipment; performs other related duties.

Classification Characteristics
Mechanic A is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Mechanic A Leader (ATU) in that a Mechanic A performs complex troubleshooting and preventive and remedial maintenance of revenue and non-revenue vehicles and equipment; performs other related duties while a Mechanic A Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Mechanic A s and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Mechanic A Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Mechanic "A" is the journey-level classification within the Mechanic career ladder, while Mechanic "B" is the intermediate classification and Mechanic "C" is the entry-level classification within the series. Duties among the three classification vary according to complexity.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Performs of coach vehicle malfunctions, determines the probable cause, and recommends necessary remedial action to Leader or Supervisor for prioritization and assignment
  • Repairs or removes and replaces dysfunctional components of major coach systems including, but not limited to, wheelchair lifts and air-conditioning units
  • Removes and replaces entire engine packages
  • Overhauls and tunes diesel and gasoline engines
  • Performs acceptance testing and pre-service preparations to newly acquired coaches
  • Operates brake lathe machine and performs brake reline overhauls
  • Repairs minor damage to interior or exterior of coach including, but not limited to, torn seats, broken windows and windshields, minor dents, and cosmetic paint damage
  • Responds to road failure situations and renders remedial action to return bus to the operating division
  • Disassembles, cleans, inspects, and rebuilds engine systems and their mechanical and electrical components
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in the maintenance and repair of transit vehicles, automobiles, other non-revenue equipment and all their major systems
  • Vehicle operations and safety
  • Shop math

Ability to:
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of transit vehicles
  • Read electrical schematics
  • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Safely operate buses, tow trucks, and other Metro vehicles
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 80 pounds
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the MECHANIC "A" position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 4 years' experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic with at least 2 years as a bus mechanic
  • Successful completion of a six month full-time training program from an accredited school in automotive/truck maintenance and repair may be substituted for up to 2 years non-bus experience performing repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of rail rapid transit vehicles utilizing digital electronics and microprocessors
  • Current and verifiable full ASE (H) Series Transit Certifications in H1-CNG, H3-Drive Train, H4-Brakes, H5-Suspension/Steering, H6-Electrical/Electronics is desirable
  • Valid California Class A driver's license

Special Conditions
  • Must be able to work on any one of the shifts, including weekends
  • Must provide own tools of the trade
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
