TRAIN OPERATOR (P/T)
Pay Grade U22

Basic Function
Under close supervision, operates public transit trains to transport passengers.

Classification Characteristics
Differs from the Train Operator (F/T) in that the Train Operator (P/T) works less than forty (40) hours per work week while the Train Operator (F/T) works a minimum of forty (40) hours per work week.

Supervised by: Director, Rail Transportation; Manager, Rail Division Transportation; Asst Manager, Rail Division Transportation; Rail Transit Operations Supervisor

Work Environment
In order to achieve Metro’s goals in support of its mission, potential candidates are required to commit and continuously practice and demonstrate the following work values:

Examples of Duties
  • Operates light and heavy rail train equipment to transport passengers
  • Informs controller personnel of operating status of equipment
  • Performs pre-pull-out inspection of train and track for safety reasons and reports any operational problems
  • Repairs and adjusts equipment to ensure that the train is in good operating condition
  • Receives and transmits two-way radio messages to report pull-out and track changes and request clearance for movement
  • Refers to route maps, time schedules, and instructions for alternate routes
  • Informs passengers of emergencies or rule violations by loud speaker or personally if on loading platform
  • Instructs student trainees and regular operators learning specific rail line routes
  • Writes reports and completes forms
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • State and local traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in the operation of rail transit vehicles
  • Rail vehicle safety rules and regulations
  • Basic time concepts

Ability to:
  • Lift up to 35 pounds
  • Operate Metro rail vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently
  • Operate technical equipment
  • Memorize signs, signals, and terminology used for rail transit
  • Work independently in a highly time-structured environment
  • Exercise sound judgment in stressful situations
  • Understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions
  • Communicate courteously and effectively with people, decipher and successfully encounter potential hazards on train, tracks or stations
  • Recognize and correct problems with equipment
  • Perceive track alterations from a great distance
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the TRAIN OPERATOR (P/T) position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 21 years of age
  • 6 months Bus Operator experience for part-time positions
  • Or 1 year Bus Operator experience for full-time positions
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license

Special Conditions
  • Must have a good driving record for the past 5 years
  • Must have normal color vision
  • Have no fear of heights
  • Move debris or articles from the track when necessary
  • Must walk long distances for assistance when necessary
  • Evacuate passengers and escort them to safety
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
