SR TRANSIT SECURITY OFFICER
Pay Grade T06

Basic Function
Under limited supervision, exercises lead responsibility over security officers assigned to protect Metro property and facilities, as well as provides security for Metro employees and property.

Classification Characteristics
Differs from Transit Security Officer II in that the Sr. Transit Security Officer is an armed, non-sworn classification with training and lead responsibilities while the Transit Security Officer II is an armed non-sworn peace officer classification with training responsibilities of a lesser degree.

Supervised by: Transit Security Lieutenant; Transit Security Sergeant

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Protects Metro passengers, employees, properties, facilities, revenues, and other assets
  • Travels to various Metro facilities to monitor Transit Security Officers in the performance of their work and assists in the resolution of routine problems
  • Conducts daily briefings to update security personnel on special assignments, general orders, training, bulletins, major events, and other significant activities
  • Coordinates and checks work of security employees
  • Records duty assignments of guards; receives and records emergency and sick time notifications
  • Reviews daily logs and incident reports
  • Conducts uniform inspections
  • Prepares various reports concerning departmental activities
  • Administers and assures adherence to Metro and departmental policies and procedures
  • Takes appropriate course of action in response to accidents, various incidents, and other occurrences of varying severity; ensures appropriate Metro staff are apprised of all developments in a timely manner
  • Responds to complaints regarding security issues
  • Assists in preliminary Internal Affairs (IA) investigations (excluding interviewing witnesses or coworkers within the bargaining unit) as assigned
  • Conducts transit security preliminary investigations as assigned
  • Trains new Transit Security Officer II recruits
  • Coordinates with law enforcement personnel, other security personnel and Metro staff as necessary
  • Writes memos regarding incidents of suspicious activity and vandalism occurring on Metro property
  • Keeps written log of daily activities
  • Perform duties of Transit Security Officer II when necessary
  • Acts as Watch Commander when assigned
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Use firearms in a safe and proper manner
  • Exercise good judgment in handling unruly persons and emergency situations, restrain unlawful intruders and repel physical attack
  • Write accurate memos of incidents
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the SR TRANSIT SECURITY OFFICER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2 1/2 years' experience as a Transit Security Officer II at Metro
  • Valid California Guard Card issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs
  • Valid Firearm permit issued by the department of Consumer Affairs
  • Uncorrected vision: no more than 20/70 in both eyes; normal color vision
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license
  • Must qualify with and carry firearm while on duty
  • Must be able to obtain a valid California Firearm permit issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs
  • Must be able to obtain a valid California Guard Card issued by the Department of Consumer Affairs

Special Conditions
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Must have normal color vision
  • Must pass background investigation and psychological evaluation
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
