SIGNAL INSPECTOR LEADER
Pay Grade A17

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs preventive and corrective maintenance and inspection of Train Control Systems and related signal equipment and interface while leading Signal Inspectors by assigning work and providing training.

Classification Characteristics
Signal Inspector is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Signal Inspector Leader (ATU) in that a Signal Inspector performs preventive and corrective maintenance and inspection of Train Control Systems and related signal equipment and interface while a Signal Inspector Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Signal Inspectors and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Signal Inspector Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Differs from Traction Power Inspector in that Signal Inspector performs work on equipment and systems to control train movement, while Traction Power Inspector performs work on the power distribution system to move the trains. Differs from Track Inspector in that Signal Inspector performs work on equipment and systems to control train movement, while Track Inspector performs work on the track ballast and the rails on which the trains move.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Inspects, tests, and performs corrective and preventative maintenance of wayside signals, interlocking, centralized traffic control (CTC), automatic train control (ATC), and grade crossing warning devices, including signal bonding, track transmitters and receivers, impedance bonds, power switches, multiplexing equipment, energized equipment up to 480 volts, and electromechanical signal devices
  • Responds to equipment failure, determines the cause, and restores equipment to service
  • Maintains records and presents reports of inspection, testing, and repair
  • Monitors signal work performed by outside contractors
  • Performs new construction or modifications to existing systems
  • Leads employees by assigning work and providing training
  • Performs other related duties
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures used in the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of train control systems
  • Standard operating procedures used for entering and working in a live track environment

Ability to:
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Troubleshoot and repair various electronic devices and printed circuit boards
  • Read and understand schematic diagrams
  • Use standard electronic test equipment

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the SIGNAL INSPECTOR LEADER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Associates of Science degree or the successful completion of a two-year/full-time Electronics Technology or related program from an accredited electronics school OR
  • 2 years' of journey-level experience performing inspection, testing, repair, and maintenance of electromechanical or electronic systems and equipment with experience on railroad signaling equipment preferred
  • Must possess or be able to acquire a valid California Class A Commercial driver's license

Special Conditions
  • Must wear required safety equipment whenever on duty
  • Must have normal color vision
  • Must be able to work in an environment with energized overhead catenary or contact rail system, power distribution equipment, and long-line freight and vehicular traffic
  • Must provide own tools of the trade
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days per week
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
