Basic Function
Under close supervision, performs unskilled and semi-skilled paving grounds maintenance, and assists other facilities maintenance personnel in more complex tasks. |
Classification Characteristics
Differs from Property Maintainer in that Laborer "A" performs unskilled and semi-skilled tasks paving and grounds maintenance, runs errands, and provides unskilled or semi-skilled assistance in carpentry, painting, shop equipment maintenance or other craft areas, while Property Maintainer performs semi-skilled and skilled work in those areas. |

Examples of Duties
- Removes old paving, excavates and prepares area to be paved, and evenly distributes, levels and smoothes asphalt or concrete slabs

Loads, unloads and transports tools, supplies and equipment, which may require use of trucks and/or trailers

Operates forklifts and heavy construction equipment including, but not limited to, bulldozers, front end loaders, dump trucks and rollers

Trims trees and bushes and kills and removes weeds at Metro facilities and layover zones
-
Moves full loads, unloads and transports tools, supplies and equipment, which may require use of trucks and/or trailers

Moves furniture

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures utilized in construction and asphalt and concrete paving

Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
- Operate heavy construction equipment including, but not limited to, bulldozers, front end loaders, dump trucks, and rollers

Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment

Establish and maintain effective working relationships

Communicate effectively with others

Safely operate Metro vehicles

Follow verbal and written instructions

Lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds

Perform strenuous tasks throughout the shift

Work at heights up to 20 feet

Tolerate exposure to noise, unpleasant odors, and outdoor work at night and in all types of weather

Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable time frame

Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the LABORER "A" position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 1 years experience performing custodial or other related work

Valid California Class C drivers license
|
Special Conditions
- Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required

Must be able to obtain a Class A drivers license
- Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
