Basic Function
To supervise personnel performing printing and reprographic work.

Supervises: Printer II; Photolithograph Processing Operator; Bindery Operator II; Printer I; Photocopying Machine Operator

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Work Environment
In order to achieve Metro’s goals in support of its mission, potential candidates are required to commit and continuously practice and demonstrate the following work values:

Examples of Duties
  • Oversees the operation of scanning, printing, binding, and reprographic equipment and processes, including computerized four-color printing process
  • Trains employees in the proper use and maintenance of equipment
  • Reviews and schedules production orders, original art work, and copy submitted in person or via online document management systems for printing or reproduction
  • Maintains records on production work flow, labor and material costs, and employee time and attendance
  • Maintains inventory control
  • Orders reprographic printing materials and supplies
  • Performs minor equipment repairs
  • Supervises subordinate staff
  • Accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro’s safety rules, polices, and procedures
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Theories, principles, and practices of printing and reprographic processes, equipment, parts, and operations
  • Quality control standards for the production of printed materials
  • Basic math
  • Principles of supervision

Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, and monitor printing operations of an assigned shift
  • Meet precision and productivity demands
  • Analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions
  • Maintain printing equipment and perform minor repairs
  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Supervises subordinate staff
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the PRINTING SERVICES SUPERVISOR position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Associate's degree - Graphic Arts or other related field
  • 3 years' journey-level experience performing printing work

Special Conditions
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Exposure to machinery vibration, chemicals, inks, and hazardous materials
  • Requires some physical activity
  • Visual acuity is needed to determine color shades, intensities, and differences
