Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, types, prints, updates, and maintains more complex departmental records.

Classification Characteristics
Differs from Clerk in that General Clerk II maintains more complex departmental records and has frequent contact with both Metro staff and the public, while Clerk maintains complex departmental records and has frequent contact with either Metro staff or the public. Differs from General Clerk in that General Clerk II maintains complex departmental records, while General Clerk maintains complicated Metro-wide and departmental records.

Work Environment
In order to achieve Metro’s goals in support of its mission, potential candidates are required to commit and continuously practice and demonstrate the following work values:

Examples of Duties
  • Operates computer terminal to retrieve, enter, and update records
  • Types, prints, files, and maintains memos, reports, letters, and other departmental correspondence using a typewriter and/or personal computer
  • Operates a calculator to prepare payroll records and to determine sick time, vacation accruals, and salary step increases
  • Processes warranty claims in accordance with contract provisions and catalog standards
  • Proofreads daily payroll journals, batch-proof listings, weekly sick and vacation registers, and pay detail reports to correct payroll errors
  • Composes routine correspondence in relation to assigned tasks
  • Posts vacation, sick leaves, and step increases to personnel records
  • Answers inquiries from Metro staff and the public regarding operating procedures and departmental records
  • Proofreads correspondence and corrects errors
  • Answers telephone and acts as office receptionist
  • Opens, date stamps, and distributes mail
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • General office practices and procedures
  • Correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Complex recordkeeping
  • Basic payroll practices and procedures

Ability to:
  • Type 40 net words per minute
  • Prepare correspondence and reports and maintains complex records
  • Operate a calculator
  • Operate specified word processing equipment and/or personal computer and computer terminal
  • Proofread work and identify errors
  • File materials alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically
  • Deal tactfully and effectively with the public and other Metro staff
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the GENERAL CLERK II position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 1 year of experience performing responsible public contact and clerical duties
