POWER YARD SWEEPER
Pay Grade A05

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, operates a power driven street sweeper to sweep yards and other Metro property and performs minor mechanical maintenance and adjustments to power sweeping equipment.

Classification Characteristics
Power Yard Sweeper is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Power Yard Sweeper Leader (ATU) in that a Power Yard Sweeper operates a power driven street sweeper to sweep yards and other Metro property and performs minor mechanical maintenance and adjustments to power sweeping equipment while a Power Yard Sweeper Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Power Yard Sweeper s and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Power Yard Sweeper Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Differs from Laborer "A" in that Power Yard Sweeper removes debris and cleans and sweeps various Metro locations using a power driven sweeper, while Laborer 'A" operates heavy construction equipment including bulldozers, front end loaders and dump trucks and performs skilled and semi-skilled grounds maintenance duties.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Operates power driven street sweeping equipment to remove debris from yards, layover zones, and other Metro equipment
  • Performs routine maintenance of power street sweeping equipment, including, but not limited to, dumping swept debris, cleaning the equipment inside and out, lubricating mechanical parts, filling tank with water, and fueling the vehicle to prepare for the next day’s operation
  • Inspects tires, lights, brooms, general exterior and interior compartments of power sweeper, performs minor remedial maintenance on the spot, and reports more serious malfunctions to the supervisor
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining effective power sweeping practices
  • Maintains record of sweeping operations
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • State and local traffic laws and ordinances
  • Procedures for routine maintenance of power sweeping equipment
  • Mechanical parts of motorized and power equipment
  • Safety procedures in the operation of power sweeping and related maintenance equipment

Ability to:
  • Operate power sweeping equipment
  • Use mechanic’s tools to adjust, remove and replace minor parts and materials
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Safely operate Metro vehicles
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the POWER YARD SWEEPER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 2 years’ experience performing one or a combination of the following: automotive repair, heavy equipment operation or heavy equipment maintenance
  • Up to 2 years’ full-time training or education at a recognized trade school or apprenticeship program in a directly related field may be substituted for equivalent experience
  • Valid California Class C driver's license

Special Conditions
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
