BUS EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTOR
Pay Grade C04

Basic Function
To provide training in the maintenance and repair of revenue and non-revenue service vehicles and other related equipment and areas of interest.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Conducts classroom and individualized training on all aspects of equipment and vehicle repair, testing and maintenance
  • Prepares promotional testing performance exams which may include operation of revenue bus driving in yard/shop only
  • Provides hands-on demonstration in the repair and maintenance of various components of bus systems
  • Prepares lesson plans, outlines and schedules
  • Develops detailed technical training and testing materials
  • Coordinates specialized training needs with division and department heads
  • Reports to various work locations to provide training and/or technical support to maintenance personnel
  • Keeps abreast with current technology by attending factory update training sessions
  • Establishes safety guidelines on maintenance procedures
  • Interviews and tests applicants
  • Operates shop tools and equipment for classroom demonstration purposes
  • Assists in reviews, updates, and distributions of new service manuals and wiring schematics
  • Provides orientation to personnel on new equipment, systems, and vehicles
  • Analyzes vendor training materials for accuracy and system compatibility
  • Prepares reports and correspondence
  • Investigates equipment-related accidents
  • Serves as technical expert for troubleshooting maintenance problems
  • Interprets vehicle codes and other laws and regulations
  • Develops and assesses safety programs
  • Provides technical expertise to other department personnel
  • Testifies as an expert witness at trials and hearings as required
  • Accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro’s safety rules, polices, and procedures
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Theories, principles, and practices of repair and maintenance of engines, parts, components and electrical systems of diesel, gasoline, and alternate fuel vehicles
  • Safe and proper use of tools and other equipment
  • Applicable safety, environmental, and vehicle laws, rules, and regulations
  • Accident investigation
  • Development of curricula, learning objectives, and lesson plans

Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, and monitor training of skilled personnel in maintenance and repair of equipment and related systems
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Operate computers and M3 information kiosks
  • Assess division training needs
  • Develop lesson plans
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence
  • Analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions
  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable time frame
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the BUS EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTOR position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Associate's degree - Related field or equivalent training from a recognized trade school
  • 2 years of experience performing work or conducting training in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
  • Professional certificates/licenses: Vocational Training or Teaching Credential
  • Valid California Class C driver's license
  • Bachelor's degree in related field desirable

Special Conditions
  • Frequent exposure to electrical, mechanical, chemical, and physical hazards
  • May operate commercial heavy duty equipment to conduct specialized training programs to maintenance personnel restricted to in yard operation only
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
