ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION TECHNICIAN LEADER
Pay Grade A28
Basic Function
| Under moderate supervision, installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repair communications and electronic equipment used on buses and other vehicles. |
Classification Characteristics
| Electronic Communications Technician is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Electronic Communications Technician Leader (ATU) in that an Electronic Communications Technician installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repair communications and electronic equipment used on buses and other vehicles while an Electronic Communications Technician Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Electronic Communications Technicians and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Electronic Communications Technician Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
Differs from Systems Electronic Communications Technician in that Electronic Communication Technician installs, maintains and repairs communications equipment used in coaches and other Metro vehicles, while Systems Electronic Communications Technician installs, maintains and repairs advanced communications, telephone, audio, video and alarm system equipment at a systems level. |

Examples of Duties
- Performs field service maintenance on two-way radio, head sign, public address, and silent alarm system on coaches and other Metro vehicles

Performs bench repairs to circuit boards on the component level of electronic communication equipment including, but not limited to, mobile radios, filters, control heads, hand sets, dot modules, power supplies, encoder boxes, microphones and amplifiers

Installs electronic communication and other electronic equipment on coaches and other Metro vehicles

Programs and operates automatic test equipment to aid in the troubleshooting of electronic equipment

Removes electronic communications equipment from vehicles taken out of service

Performs basic preventive and remedial maintenance on telephone key systems and badge readers

Maintains automatic vehicle monitoring equipment on coaches

Prepares routine records and narrative reports of maintenance activity

Suggests modifications in electronic communications equipment and servicing methods

Repairs and maintains electronic fare collection equipment

Leads employees by assigning work and providing training

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials and equipment, and safety procedures utilized in the installation and maintenance of analog and digital electronic equipment, including, but not limited to two-way radio, public address and electronic headsign and farebox systems

Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
- Install and maintain analog and digital electronic communications and two-way radio equipment, read electronic schematic diagrams and equipment specifications

Follow oral and written instructions

Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds

Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe

Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION TECHNICIAN LEADER position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 2 years’ experience performing installation, repair, maintenance and acceptance testing of two-way radios and digital equipment AND Graduation from a 2 year electronics trade school or college, with coursework and associated lab classes in DC, AC, semiconductor devices and AM-FM radio theory OR

4 years’ experience performing installation, repair, maintenance and acceptance testing of two-way radios and digital equipment

Advanced courses in communications and digital electronics desirable

Must be able to obtain a valid commercial General Radio/Telephone Operators License issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) during the probationary period

Valid California Class C driver’s license

- Must have normal color vision
Must provide own tools of the trade

Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
