CAMERA OPERATOR/SCREEN PROCESS TECHNICIAN
Pay Grade A34
Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, operates an Acti-process camera and uses related darkroom equipment in the preparation of silk screens and graphic art work. |
Classification Characteristics
Differs from Photolithographic Processing Operator in that Camera Operator operates screen printing press and related computer equipment in the preparation of silk screens for signs, decals, posters, banners and other related work, which includes the operation of sheet metal fabrication equipment and various types of printer/plotter while the Photolithographic Processing Operator prepares metal and paper plates as part of the printing process.
There is a Camera Operator/Screen Process Technician Leader who in addition to the regular Camera Operator/Screen Process Technician duties, is responsible for assigning duties and directing employees in the performance of their work under the supervision of his/her immediate supervisor with whom he/she shall consult in all matters affecting such work. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. |

Examples of Duties
- Creates and reproduces artwork with graphic computer software

Works from sketches, blueprints, drawings, and verbal information to produce layout and artwork for screen printing

Develops graphic files into images, which are then transformed to yield a positive image film
-
Touches up both positive and negative films
-
Produces a negative image on a silkscreen treated with a photosensitive emulsion by placing the positive image film
- between the silk screen and a light source on a vacuum frame
Mixes and matches paint colors; stretches screen fabric onto printing frame; operates printing press; and fabricates sign-blanks

Operates computer graphic software and related equipment

Prepares material to be silk screened

Applies ink, paint, or other material to produce image on plexiglass, metal, vinyl, cardboard, fabric, or wood

Performs basic shop-keeping functions which includes cleaning, adjusting, maintaining, and making minor repairs to related equipment

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, equipments and safety procedures utilized in screen printing

Functions and operations of related computer equipment and graphic software

Ability to:
- Safely operate related signage equipment

Perform color separations

Follow oral and written instructions

Tolerate exposure to chemicals, fumes, and odors

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the CAMERA OPERATOR/SCREEN PROCESS TECHNICIAN position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 4 years' of experience performing all phases of silkscreen graphics and printing procedures and
-
Up to 2 years training or education in a directly related field or recognized school or apprenticeship program may be substituted for equivalent experience

Must be able to obtain a forklift certification/license
-
Must possess a valid California Class C drivers license

Special Conditions
- Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
