Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, cuts, shapes, assembles, installs, and repairs cabinetry. |
Classification Characteristics
Cabinet Maker is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Cabinet Maker Leader (ATU) in that a Cabinet Maker cuts, shapes, assembles, installs, and repairs cabinetry while a Cabinet Maker Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Cabinet Makers and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Cabinet Maker Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
Differs from property maintainer in that Cabinet Maker designs and fabricates cabinetry, while Property Maintainer performs rough and finished carpentry on various Metro facilities, in addition to a broad range of other property maintenance work. |

Examples of Duties
- Designs, fabricates, and repairs wooden cabinets and other furniture, utilizing a variety of hand and power tools and woodworking equipment

Studies blueprints or drawings of articles to be constructed or repaired, and plans sequence of cutting or shaping operations to be performed

Fabricates component parts and trims joints to ensure snug fit

Assembles component parts with screws, nails dowels, or glue into a completed unit

Prepares completed unit to be finished or glues down formica finish

Installs completed cabinetry at various Metro locations

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures of the cabinetmaking trade

Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
- Construct and repair cabinetry

Safely operate woodworking machines such as power saws, jointer, molder, and shaper

Read and interpret blueprints

Follow written and oral instructions

Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds

Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe

Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the CABINET MAKER position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 4 years' experience as a cabinet maker OR successful completion of departmental personnel qualification standards for Cabinetmaker

Up to 2 years full-time training or education in cabinetmaking at a recognized trade school or apprenticeship program may be substituted for equivalent experience

Valid California Class C driver's license

Special Conditions
- Must provide own tools of the trade

Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
