WARRANTY AND EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
Pay Grade A33
Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, assists in identifying defects and processing warranty claims, and providing input for technical specifications of new buses and equipment. |
Classification Characteristics
Warranty and Equipment Mechanic is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Warranty and Equipment Mechanic Leader (ATU) in that a Warranty and Equipment Mechanic assists in identifying defects and processing warranty claims, and providing input for technical specifications of new buses and equipment while a Warranty and Equipment Mechanic Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Warranty and Equipment Mechanics and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Warranty and Equipment Mechanic Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
Differs from Mechanic "A" in that Warranty and Equipment Mechanic tests and measures equipment performance and suitability for Metro needs, while Mechanic "A" performs complex diagnosis of malfunctions and performs more complex preventive and remedial maintenance tasks. |

Examples of Duties
- Investigates and tests new bus malfunctions and parts failures

Instructs Division mechanics during campaign modifications

Assists in the development of design modifications for new buses and vehicular equipment

Assists in the inspection of buses and related equipment at manufacturing sites and Metro property

Assists in developing technical specifications for equipment purchases
-
Prepares written correspondence and reports in support of warranty claims and relating to other work performed

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Advanced methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in the inspection and testing of new transit vehicle components and their major electrical systems

- Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures

Perform advanced troubleshooting of vehicular equipment functioning

Read manufacturers parts and maintenance manuals

Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment

Safely operate buses, tow trucks, and other Metro vehicles

Lift and move objects weighing up to 80 pounds

Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe

Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the WARRANTY AND EQUIPMENT MECHANIC position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 4 years' experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic with at least 2 years as a bus mechanic

Successful completion of a six month full-time training program from an accredited school in automotive/truck maintenance and repair may be substituted for up to 2 years non-bus experience

Current and verifiable full ASE (H) Series Transit Certifications in H1-CNG, H3-Drive Train, H4-Brakes, H5-Suspension/Steering, H6-Electrical/Electronics is desirable

Valid California Class A driver's license

Special Conditions
- Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required

Must provide own tools of the trade
- Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
