Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, operates computer or word processing equipment to input, edit, and print documents. |
Classification Characteristics
Differs from Typist Clerk in that Word Processor Operator, as a primary function, produces complex documents using computer or word processing equipment, while Typist Clerk performs a variety of clerical duties and types routine documents usually using a typewriter.
Differs from Data Technician in that Word Processor Operator uses a computer or word processing equipment to produce correspondence, narrative reports, and other documents, while Data Technician performs data processing work in adapting and utilizing software to produce reports. |

Examples of Duties
- Operates word processing equipment and/or a personal computer to input, edit, and print documents

Proofreads and corrects all text for accurate spelling, typing, grammar, and formatting

Uses assigned identification codes to store and retrieve documents on diskettes

Operates, maintains, and utilizes a diskette filing system to store diskettes when not in use

Communicates with document originators to explain word processing capabilities and to insure that work is done to the satisfaction of the originator

Determines order in which documents are processed to ensure timely and efficient work-flow

Maintains confidentiality of documents produced

Provides other clerical support to office staff

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Major applications of the specified word processing system

Proper use, care, and storage of word processing diskettes

General office practices and procedures

Standard business English and formats

Ability to:
- Type 40 net words per minute

Edit, combine, print, and electronically store text on the specified word processing equipment and/or a personal computer

Organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines

Proofread and correct text for accurate spelling, typing, punctuation, grammar, and formatting

Deal tactfully and effectively with supervisors, other Metro personnel, and the public as required

Communicate effectively orally and in writing

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the WORD PROCESSOR OPERATOR position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 6 months experience operating the specified word processing equipment and/or personal computer; OR 6 months experience performing clerical work and a certificate of completion of a training program for the specified equipment and/or software
