SCREEN PROCESS SHOP SUPERVISOR

Basic Function
To supervise, plan, and manage the Screen Process Shop and related services.

Supervises: Camera Operator/Screen Process Technician

FLSA: Exempt

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Supervises the activities of the Screen Process Shop at South Park including planning, assigning, and prioritizing work for bus and rail projects
  • Supervises the Camera Operators in photographic and darkroom laboratory work in the preparation of silk-screen signs, decals, posters, viewgraphs, charts and slides
  • Works with customers to develop graphic designs, signage, and decals that meet their needs at reasonable cost
  • Coordinates with other Metro staff on design changes and resolves problems that may impact the progress of various projects
  • Develops workplans, safety guidelines, and standards to conform to current industry practices
  • Updates ATU Employee Personnel Qualification Standards (PQS) as necessary; ensures personnel competencies by evaluating their ability to complete PQS
  • Keep current on new technology, and requests capital funds for equipment that will increase productivity of the shop; participates in the development for new equipment specifications
  • Ensures that personnel are trained on new equipment
  • Prepares capital and operating budget requests for Screen Process Shop, and performs administrative tasks related to day-to-day operations
  • Administers section’s Safety Awareness Program, conducting monthly safety training sessions
  • Coordinates with Screen Process Shop and other related units in Facilities Maintenance and Non-Revenue Equipment Maintenance regarding workflow
  • Accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro’s safety rules, polices, and procedures
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • All facets of silk-screen process printing including screen process ink and substrate compatibility
  • Basic and current principles of photographic and darkroom laboratory work in the preparation of silk-screen graphics, signs, decals posters, viewgraphs, charts, slides dials, and printed circuits
  • Safety practices for graphics equipment operation
  • Basic understanding of math s it relates to one and two point proportion, perspective, and type specification
  • Advanced application of graphic hardware and software
  • Qualities and properties of print media and inks, and appropriate color applications of computer color designations
  • Principles of image resolution, color mixing, and matching

Ability to:
  • Supervise staff with varying degrees of expertise
  • Plan, organize, and monitor the work of the Screen Process Shop and determine strategies to achieve goals
  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and ATU agreement
  • Develop operating and capital requests
  • Maintain organized and accurate graphic job files on computer database
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Exercise judgment, analyze situation, identify problems, and recommend solutions
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and vendors
  • Solve printing and equipment problems
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the SCREEN PROCESS SHOP SUPERVISOR position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Graphics, fine art or related field
  • 5 years' experience supervising screen process shop
  • Valid California Class C driver's license
  • Masters Degree in a related field desirable

Special Conditions
  • Exposure to the use of graphics equipment such as process camera, screen process press, sheet metal equipment, graphic computer equipment, photographic computer, densitomoter, knives, paper cutters, T-squares, triangles, compass, graphics equipment, Ink, chemicals, and other solvents
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
