SHEET METAL WORKER
Pay Grade A32

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, fabricates and installs a variety of sheet metal parts and structures.

Classification Characteristics
Sheet Metal Worker is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Sheet Metal Worker Leader (ATU) in that a Sheet Metal Worker fabricates and installs a variety of sheet metal parts and structures while a Sheet Metal Worker Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Sheet Metal Workers and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Sheet Metal Worker Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Differs from Welder in that Sheet Metal Worker diagrams, fabricates, and installs various sheet metal parts and structures from sheet metal up to 3/16" thickness, while Welder primarily welds metal parts made by the Sheet Metal Worker and fabricates parts from metal heavier than 3/16".

Examples of Duties
  • Uses a variety of hand, machine, power, and welding tools to fabricate, repair, and install ferrous and non-ferrous sheet metal components and structures
  • Utilizes engineering drawings and blueprints, and develops shop drawings
  • Prepares and lays out sheet metal patterns
  • Fabricates tools
  • Maintains tools and equipment
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in sheet metal work
  • Properties of metals as they relate to sheet metal construction and repair activities
  • Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Fabricate from sheet metal
  • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Operate oxyacetylene, arc, and spot welding equipment
  • Read and understand engineering drawings
  • Safely operate Metro vehicles
  • Perform arithmetical computations and tabulate figures
  • Work with minimal supervision
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the SHEET METAL WORKER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 4 years' experience performing sheet metal fabrication, assembly, installation, and repair
  • Up to 2 years' full-time training or education at a recognized trade school or apprenticeship program in sheet metal work may be substituted for equivalent experience
  • Valid California Class C driver's license

Special Conditions
  • Must provide own tools of the trade
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
