To provide training in the maintenance and repair of rail vehicles and other related equipment. |

Examples of Duties
- Conducts classroom and individualized training on all aspects of equipment and vehicle repair, testing and maintenance

Prepares lesson plans, schedules, and testing performance exams

Provides hands-on demonstration in the repair and maintenance of various components of the rail systems

Develops detailed technical training and testing materials
-
Coordinates specialized training needs with division heads
-
Reports to various work locations to provide training and/or technical support to rail maintenance personnel
-
Keeps abreast with current technology by attending factory update training sessions
-
Establishes safety guidelines on maintenance procedures
-
Interviews and tests applicants
-
Operates shop tools and equipment for demonstration purposes related to rail systems
-
Reviews, updates, and distributes new manuals and wiring schematics
-
Provides orientation to personnel on new equipment, systems, and vehicles
-
Analyzes vendor training materials for accuracy and system compatibility
-
Prepares reports and correspondence

Investigates equipment-related accidents
-
Serves as technical expert for troubleshooting maintenance problems
-
Interprets vehicle codes and other laws and regulations
-
Develops and assesses safety programs
-
Provides technical expertise to other department personnel
-
Accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metros safety rules, polices, and procedures

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Theories, principles, and practices of repair and maintenance of rail vehicle engines, parts, components and electrical systems

Safe and proper use of tools and other equipment

Applicable safety, environmental, and vehicle laws, rules, and regulations

Development of curricula, learning objectives, and lesson plans

- Plan, organize, and monitor training of skilled personnel in maintenance and repair of equipment and related systems

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the RAIL EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTOR position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- Associate's degree in Electronics or equivalent training from a recognized trade school

3 years of full-time experience performing electro-mechanical repairs of rail vehicles OR 3 years full-time experience providing engineering support in rail engineering maintenance OR 2 years full-time experience conducting training in the repair and maintenance of rail vehicles and equipment

Valid California Class C driver's license

Experience as outlined above may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis

Special Conditions
- Exposure to electrical, mechanical, chemical, and physical hazards

Must be able to obtain a commercial drivers license in order to operate an emergency response (Hi-Rail) equipment

Must comply with all California Occupational Safety & Health Act (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and protective gear "including but not limited" to respirators and/or hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required

Must have normal color vision
- Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
