RAIL BODY/PAINT REPAIRER
Pay Grade A33

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs all types of body and paint repairs on light rail vehicles.

Classification Characteristics
Rail Body/Paint Repairer is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. The Rail Body and Paint Repairer performs minor to major body and paint repairs on light rail vehicles. There is also a Rail Body/Painter Repairer Leader who in addition to the regular Rail Body/Painter Repairer duties, is responsible for assigning duties and directing employees in the performance of their work under the supervision of his/her immediate supervisor with whom he/she shall consult in all matters affecting such work. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Differs from Body Repairer 'A' in that Rail Body and Paint Repairer repairs minor to major body and paint damage on rail vehicles, while Body Repairer 'A' repairs body damage on buses.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Repairs body and paint damage to the interior and exterior of the light rail vehicles
  • Removes vehicle parts such as headlights to perform repairs on the damaged areas
  • Uses Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding equipment to repair damage
  • Mixes paints, matches colors, and paints vehicle surfaces with high volume low pressure (HVLP) spray guns
  • Responds to emergency body repair and maintenance requirements of rail vehicles
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures utilized in the repair and painting of rail vehicle bodies
  • Vehicle operation and safety

  • Perform repair and painting to a variety of rail vehicle body surfaces

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the RAIL BODY/PAINT REPAIRER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 2 year’s experience in paint and body repair of cars, trucks, or rail vehicles and six months’ welding experience
  • Successful completion of a full time training program from an accredited school in paint and body repair may be substituted for an equivalent amount of actual work experience
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license

Special Conditions
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety & Health Act (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and protective gear "including but not limited" to respirators and/or hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Must be able to work on any one of three shifts and weekends
  • May be exposed to weather, chemical, electrical, and physical hazards when performing duties
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
