RAIL WARRANTY SIGNAL SPECIALIST
Pay Grade A46

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, assists in identifying defects and processing warranty claims of Train Control Systems and related signal equipment and interfaces.

Classification Characteristics
Rail Warranty Signal Inspector is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position in Wayside Systems. It differs from the ATU Signal Inspector Leader and Rail Warranty Equipment Specialist in that a Rail Warranty Signal Inspector assists in identifying defects and processing warranty claims for Train Control Systems, related signal equipment and interfaces. The position also acquires parts and materials for projects and repair work, and assists in developing technical specifications for Train Control equipment purchases. The Signal Inspector Leader performs preventive and corrective maintenance and inspection of Train Control Systems, related signal equipment and interface while leading Signal Inspectors by assigning work and providing training. The Rail Warranty Equipment Specialist is assigned to Rail Operations and is responsible for identifying rail component defects, processing warranty claims, and providing input for technical specifications for new rail cars and procurements. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.

Examples of Duties
  • Performs journey-level diagnostics of Train Control equipment malfunctions, determines the probable cause, and prepares required reports necessary to document warranty recovery actions
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections of Train Control Systems and related signal equipment and interfaces
  • Utilizes test equipment, schematics, and drawings to support maintenance and repairs of Train Control Wayside Systems
  • Conducts operational inspections and evaluations of repairs and testing performed by contractors or vendors; documents warranty parts repaired or replaced
  • Reviews trouble reports and determines if a warranty applies
  • Assists in the development of design modifications for Train Control Systems and related signal equipment and interfaces
  • Assists in developing technical specifications for equipment purchases
  • Prepares written correspondence and reports in support of warranty claims and relating to other work performed
  • Generates warranty recovery automatic claims via M3 Spear 4i system
  • Maintains warranty parts tracking records
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in the inspection and testing of Train Control Systems and related signal equipment and interfaces
  • Shop math
  • M3 Spear 4i system
  • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Power Point, Access)
  • Wayside Systems equipment and part manufactures

Ability to:
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Read manufacturers’ parts and maintenance manuals
  • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Read and understand schematic diagrams

  • Perform strenuous tasks on occasion
  • Work at heights up to 50 feet
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the RAIL WARRANTY SIGNAL SPECIALIST position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Associates of Science degree or the successful completion of a two-year/full-time Electronics Technology or related program from an accredited electronics school AND 2 years' of journey-level experience performing inspection, testing, repair, and maintenance of electromechanical or electronic systems and equipment with experience on railroad signaling equipment preferred OR 4 years’ experience performing inspection, testing, repair, and maintenance of train control systems
  • Valid California class C driver’s license

Special Conditions
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Must have normal color vision
  • Must provide own tools of the trade
  • Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations
