PAYROLL CLERK
Pay Grade B23

Basic Function
Under supervision, processes changes in payroll data and audits, verifies and reconciles payroll adjustments.

Classification Characteristics
Differs from Account Payable Clerk in that Payroll Clerk performs payroll related functions, while Accounts Payable Clerk processes vendors’ invoices.

Work Environment
In order to achieve Metro’s goals in support of its mission, potential candidates are required to commit and continuously practice and demonstrate the following work values:

Examples of Duties
  • Batches Form 172 adjustment sheets for current and prior payroll periods
  • Uses computer terminal to input data from the adjustment sheets, deduction updates, canceled checks, advances, refunds, and final settlement reports into the system
  • Prepares special checks for payroll advance payments, refunds, and final settlements
  • Reviews computer edit of payroll input for accuracy
  • Prepares corrections for errors, documents adjustments, and enters data into the system
  • Computes tax deductions for specified exemptions, using appropriate tables
  • Balances batch inputs and corrections to the bi-weekly payrolls
  • Files payroll reports including “PAR”, “PIR”, and financial controls
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic accounting methods, principles, and practices
  • Payroll functions
  • Basic arithmetic

Ability to:
  • Operate a calculator
  • Operate a computer terminal
  • Balance and audit accounting information
  • Read, post, and verify data
  • Perform simple arithmetical computations and tabulate figures with speed and accuracy
  • Proofread work and identify errors
  • Write legible
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the PAYROLL CLERK position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 6 months’ experience performing payroll functions and other responsible clerical accounting duties
