PAINTER LEADER
Pay Grade A19
Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, applies paint and related materials to buildings, equipment, and asphalt and concrete surfaces. |
Classification Characteristics
Painter is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Painter Leader (ATU) in that a Painter applies paint and related materials to buildings, equipment, and asphalt and concrete surfaces while a Painter Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Painters and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Painter Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
Differs from Property Maintainer in that Painter in that Painter performs master-level facilities painting on a full-time basis while Property Maintainer performs light painting in relation to other property maintenance work. |

Examples of Duties
- Paints interiors and exteriors of buildings with brushes, rollers, and spray guns

Fills, patches, and plasters holes and cracks in walls prior to painting

Cleans surfaces to be painted

Moves and covers furniture, masks fixtures, glass, and metal

Covers floors to protect from paint splatter

Paints lines and stencils numbers, letters, and other symbols on asphalt and concrete surfaces

Matches paint colors and types

Visually assess painting needs and reports them to Lead Painter or Supervisor orally and in writing

Cleans and maintains equipment and supplies

Paints furniture and other related equipment

Drives a maintenance vehicle to work locations at various Metro facilities

Leads employees by assigning work and providing training

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures of the painting trade

Proper work preparation and care of industrial painting equipment and apparatus

Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
- Determine painting needs and methods to meet them

Read and implement painting blueprints

Use various painting equipment and apparatus

Match paint colors and types

Follow oral and written instructions

Work at heights up to 40 feet

Lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds

Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe

Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the PAINTER LEADER position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 4 years experience as an industrial painter OR successful completion of departmental Personnel Qualification Standards for Painter

Up to 2 years full-time training or education in painting at a recognized trade school or apprenticeship program may be substituted for equivalent experience

Valid California Class C driver's license

- Must provide own tools of the trade

Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
