PLUMBER
Pay Grade A32

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, installs, maintains, and replaces plumbing equipment, fixtures. and irrigation systems and controllers.

Classification Characteristics
Plumber is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Plumber Leader (ATU) in that a Plumber performs installs, maintains, and replaces plumbing equipment and fixtures while a Plumber Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Plumbers and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Plumber Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Differs from Property Maintainer in that Plumber performs master-level maintenance and repair of all types of plumbing apparatus on a full-time basis, while Property Maintainer performs plumbing work in repair of bus service equipment, and a broad range of other property maintenance work.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Installs and maintains rough and finished plumbing apparatus at Metro facilities
  • Installs and maintains irrigation sprinkler systems
  • Installs shop and bus service equipment piping for water, gas, air, and chemical systems
  • Troubleshoots malfunctions in plumbing systems, and takes action to correct the problem
  • Reads and interprets building plans, blueprints, sketches, and piping diagrams
  • Operates hand and power tools and equipment to measure, cut, bend, thread, and ream pipe
  • Maintains tools and equipment
  • Drives a plumbing truck with all necessary tools, supplies, and equipment to job sites at various Metro locations
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures of the plumbing trade
  • Local building codes
  • Shop Math related to plumbing
  • Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
  • Perform plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair work
  • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Read and work from blueprints, schematics, sketches, and piping diagrams
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Work at heights up to 40 feet
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the PLUMBER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 4 years’ full-time experience as a plumber OR successful completion of departmental Personnel qualification Standards for Plumber
  • Up to 2 years’ full-time training or education in plumbing at a recognized trade school or apprenticeship program may be substituted for equivalent experience
  • Valid California Class C driver's license

Special Conditions
  • Must provide own tools of trade
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
