PAINTER "A" LEADER
Pay Grade A16

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, paints surfaces of revenue buses and related parts while leading Painter "A"s by assigning work and providing training.

Classification Characteristics
Painter A (RRC) is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Painter A (RRC) Leader (ATU) in that a Painter A (RRC) paints surfaces of revenue buses and related parts while a Painter A (RRC) Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Painter A (RRC)s and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Painter A (RRC) Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Differs from Body Repairer "A" in that Painter A (RRC) paints bodies of revenue buses and related parts while Body Repairer "A" repairs damaged bodies, frames and structural parts of revenue buses. Differs from Painter in that Painter "A" (RRC) paints bodies of revenue buses and related parts while Painter paints building interiors, exteriors, and other apparatus.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Paints interior and exterior surfaces of revenue buses and related parts and other vehicles according to specifications using hand tools and power equipment
  • Removes old paint from vehicles using hand tools and chemical agents as appropriate
  • Cleans and sands surfaces to be painted; masks surfaces which are not to be painted
  • Mixes paints and matches paint colors
  • Paints insignia, identifying letters, stripes, and numerals using stencils
  • Applies decals to exterior and interior of vehicles
  • Operates robotic paint equipment and assists with programming
  • Leads employees by assigning work and providing training
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Theories, principles, and practices in the painting of bus bodies, frames, and related parts
  • Operations of various hand and power tools and equipment used to paint vehicles
  • Properties of various paints, including polyurethane, acrylic, oil, and water based
  • Power equipment operations and safety
  • Shop mathematics
  • Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
  • Paint revenue bus bodies, related parts, and other vehicles
  • Apply insignia and decals
  • Read, understand, and apply blueprints, diagrams and specifications
  • Safely use and dispose of various paints and hazardous materials
  • Safely operate Metro vehicles
  • Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the PAINTER "A" LEADER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Four years’ journey-level experience performing painting of heavy vehicle or automotive bodies, frames, and related parts
  • Experience painting buses and related parts desirable
  • Valid California Class C driver's license

Special Conditions
  • Must provide own tools of the trade, except for spray guns and compressors
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
