NON-REVENUE MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTOR
Pay Grade C04

Basic Function
To provide maintenance and repair training for automotive and heavy duty non-revenue service vehicles.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Develops curriculum and manages the learning process including student advisement within the instruction area to ensure an effective learning experience
  • Prepares lesson plans, class outlines, and schedules
  • Provides instruction and leadership in the areas of safety, operations and maintenance of shop tools and equipment
  • Develops, implements, and teaches courses using eLearning technology and teaches via other non-traditional delivery methods as required
  • Incorporates the most current teaching techniques, subject area developments, and technology into the learning experience
  • Provides classroom instruction in accordance with approved course outlines
  • Informs students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance requirements, and academic progress
  • Provides for effective evaluation of the learning experience of each student
  • Prepares and grades assignments, projects, and examinations as required
  • Assists in vehicle specification writing and on-site inspections
  • Develops technical training and testing materials
  • Coordinates training needs with operating divisions and department heads
  • Attends onsite and offsite factory update training sessions
  • Establishes safety guidelines on maintenance procedures
  • Interviews and tests applicants
  • Updates and distributes new technical manuals and wiring schematics
  • Provides orientation to personnel on new equipment, systems, and vehicles
  • Analyzes vendor training materials for accuracy and system compatibility
  • Investigates equipment-related accidents
  • Interprets vehicle codes and other laws and regulations
  • Testifies as an expert witness at trials and hearings when required
  • Accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro’s safety rules, polices, and procedures
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Theories, principals, and practices of repair and maintenance of engines, parts, components, and electrical systems of diesel, gasoline, and alternate fuel vehicles
  • Safe and proper use of tools and other equipment
  • Applicable safety, environmental, and vehicle laws, rules, and regulations
  • Development of curricula, learning objectives, and lesson plans
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equal opportunity, and the academic, intellectual, and social development of all students
  • Computer applications including word processing, electronic communication, and website maintenance

Ability to:
  • Plan work, set priorities and to distinguish between the important and the urgent
  • Work effectively in a team and without close supervision
  • Plan, organize, and monitor training of skilled personnel in maintenance and repair of equipment and related systems
  • Operate vehicle maintenance computers for maintenance, work orders, and asset tracking systems
  • Assess employee training needs
  • Prepare daily and comprehensive reports
  • Work well with both internal and external customers and coworkers in a group setting
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high level of competence and expertise in the teaching field or subject area
  • Work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the NON-REVENUE MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTOR position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Associates degree - Automotive Technology or equivalent training from a recognized trade school
  • 2 years of full-time experience as an automotive journeyman technician working with vehicle software, systems, tools & equipment AND repairing, maintaining, and diagnosing hybrid vehicle propulsion systems
  • Professional certificates/licenses: Vocational Training or Teaching Credential desirable
  • Possession of ASE Certified Master Technician and/or ASE Master Mechanic (A1-A8) Certification desirable
  • Teaching experience at the Community College level desired
  • Teaching experience in hydraulic fluid applications, basic hydraulic and system trouble-shooting desirable
  • Valid California Class C driver license

Special Conditions
  • Extensive out-of-town travel may be required
