NON-DESTRUCTIVE TECHNICIAN
Pay Grade A34

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, maintains inventory of authority technical library; maintains, inventories, and repairs authority owned special tools; and performs remedial preventive maintenance of transit vehicles.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Plans, coordinates and repairs tools and diagnostic equipment; coordinates with vendors, as necessary
  • Schedules and executes classroom material pick-ups and orders with print-shop and other Metro departments and or vendors, as required
  • Performs journey-level diagnosis of bus malfunctions, determines the probable cause, and recommends necessary remedial action to appropriate Metro staff (Supervisor, Mechanic Leader, etc) for prioritization and assignment
  • Repairs, removes and replaces dysfunctional components of major coach systems and sub-systems

  • Prepares reports of tool disbursement and tracking
  • Maintains proper inventories of Metro Bus Technical Library while monitoring and distributing technical manuals to Bus Instruction Staff, operating divisions and support shops
  • Uses P-Card to purchase tools from vendors
  • Prepares a monthly statement of P-card transactions
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in the maintenance of transit vehicles
  • Shop math
  • Diagnostic & Special Tools Calibration and Settings
  • Technical manuals and publications
  • Vehicle operations and safety
  • Diagnostic tools, meters and related equipment
  • Engine/Transmission and Sub System diagnostic software

Ability to:
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of transit vehicles
  • Properly use diagnostic tools, digital meters, diagnostic computers and related equipment
  • Read and understand electrical schematics
  • Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power tools and equipment
  • Safely operate buses, tow trucks, and other Authority vehicles
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Interact professionally with both internal and external customers
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the NON-DESTRUCTIVE TECHNICIAN position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 4 years' experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic with at least 2 years as a bus mechanic
  • Successful completion of a six month full-time training program from an accredited school in automotive/truck maintenance and repair may be substituted for up to 2 years non-bus experience performing repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting of rail rapid transit vehicles utilizing digital electronics and microprocessors
  • Maintain valid California Class A driver's license with a Passenger endorsement

Special Conditions
  • Must be able to work alone and be self motivated to ensure all work assignments are completed in a timely manner
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety & Health Act (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and protective gear "including but not limited" to respirators and/or hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Must provide own tools of the trade
  • Positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations
