NON-REVENUE RAIL EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER
Pay Grade A28

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs complex preventative, remedial, and diagnostic maintenance of all Non-Revenue rail and support equipment while leading Non-Revenue Rail Equipment Mechanics by assigning work and providing training.

Classification Characteristics
There is a Non-Revenue Rail Equipment Mechanic Leader who in addition to the regular Non-Revenue Rail Equipment Mechanic duties, is responsible for assigning duties and directing employees in the performance of their work under the supervision of his/her immediate supervisor with whom he/she shall consult in all matters affecting such work. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Performs preventative and heavy overhaul maintenance work on non-revenue rail support equipment, including tamping equipment, rail grinders, high rail equipment, boom trucks, platform trucks, scissor lifts, and all other related non-revenue rail support equipment
  • Performs preventative and report work on automobiles, light trucks, heavy trucks, and trailers assigned to the Rail Maintenance Department
  • Performs diagnosis of rail-support equipment malfunctions, determines the probable cause, and make necessary repairs
  • Moves rail-support equipment with emergency equipment in shops, yards, and on the main lines
  • Conducts operational inspections and repairs, removes, and replaces dysfunctional components
  • Performs acceptance testing and pre-service preparations on newly acquired and overhauled equipment
  • Responds to equipment failure emergencies and renders remedial action
  • Utilizes test equipment, schematics, and drawings to support maintenance and repair tasks
  • Utilizes desk and laptop computers to repair and diagnose equipment
  • Leads employees by assigning work and providing training
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures utilized in the maintenance and repair of rail support equipment and automotive vehicles
  • Electromechanical and electronic systems of rail support equipment
  • Digital and analog circuitry
  • Vehicle operations and safety
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems
  • Shop math

Ability to:
  • Perform troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of rail vehicles
  • Use volt/ohm and oscilloscope meters
  • Read pneumatic and electrical schematics
  • Safety operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Safely operate rail support equipment, emergency trucks, and other Metro vehicles Follow oral and written instructions
  • Prepare activity reports
  • Operate desk and laptop computers
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 60 pounds
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the NON-REVENUE RAIL EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 4 years’ journey-level experience in the repair and maintenance of non-revenue equipment and vehicles
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license

Special Conditions
  • Must be able to obtain a Class A driver’s license with a tanker, hazmat and manual transmission endorsements
  • Must be able to work on any one of the shifts, including weekends
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days per week
  • Must provide own tools of the trade
  • Must be able to work in an environment with energized overhead catenary or contact rail power distribution systems
  • Must be able to perform outdoor work at night and in all types of weather
  • Must be able to work from elevated structures, at heights, and in tunnels
  • Must successfully complete the training class in rail support equipment systems and safety
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Must have normal color vision
