LEAD CUSTODIAN
Pay Grade BA6

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, assigns, monitors, and reviews tasks performed by work crew and maintains cleanliness of Gateway Building, divisions, and stations.

Classification Characteristics
There is a Custodian Leader who in addition to the regular Custodian duties, is responsible for assigning duties and directing employees in the performance of their work under the supervision of his/her immediate supervisor with whom he/she shall consult in all matters affecting such work. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Assigns, monitors, and reviews tasks performed by work crew
  • Trains new employees
  • Operates vacuum cleaners and shampooing machines to clean carpets
  • Sweeps and mops or scrubs hallways and stairs
  • Cleans, mops, and strips floors; operates buffing machines to wax floors
  • Lifts, moves, and empties trash and garbage containers; replaces discarded plastic bags with new bags
  • Cleans walls, windows, and ceilings
  • Dusts office furnishings
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms including removing graffiti from bathroom walls using heavy-duty chemical cleansers
  • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment used
  • Lifts, moves, and replaces emptied bottles of water with full bottles
  • Moves office furniture and other equipment and supplies between or within Metro facilities
  • Notifies management of need for repairs
  • Operates Metro vehicles to transport equipment and supplies to various Metro locations
  • Operates forklift to move trash or supplies as required
  • Leads employees by assigning work and providing training
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures utilized in custodial work
  • Leadership techniques

Ability to:
  • Assign, monitor, and review tasks performed by a work crew
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Train other employees in custodial procedures of Metro
  • Safely operate buffing, vacuuming, ceiling cleaning, and shampooing equipment
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Tolerate exposure to cleaning agents and fumes
  • Perform moderate physical labor
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 60 pounds
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the LEAD CUSTODIAN position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 1 year of full-time Metro experience performing custodial duties
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license

Special Conditions
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
