LABORER "B"
Pay Grade A44

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs entry level property maintenance work as well as oversees work of community service workers and court referred juveniles in cleaning buses, inactive rail right of way and other Metro property, bus stops and terminals.

Classification Characteristics
Laborer B is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Laborer B Leader (ATU) in that a Laborer B performs entry level property maintenance work as well as oversees work of community service workers and court referred juveniles in cleaning buses, inactive rail right of way and other Metro property, bus stops and terminals while a Laborer B Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Laborer B's and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Laborer B Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. Laborer B is an entry-level classification to be filled by ATU personnel only.

Work Environment
In order to achieve Metro’s goals in support of its mission, potential candidates are required to commit and continuously practice and demonstrate the following work values:

Examples of Duties
  • Eliminates broken bus stop post hazards
  • Reports repair of hazardous bus stop conditions following remedial action
  • Inspects existing bus stop hardware and sign(s) for structural integrity
  • Removes graffiti and stickers from bus stop posts, signs, information cubes and hardware
  • Tightens bus stop post, signs, information cubes, and hardware nuts and bolts
  • Replaces missing bus stop post rivets and plated post bolts
  • Replaces bus stop information cube inserts and sacrificial inserts
  • Assigns, monitors, and reviews tasks performed by work crew
  • Trains new workers and instructs on new procedures or methods of work
  • Operates Metro vehicles to transport work crews, equipment, and supplies to various locations
  • Monitors and verifies community service work in progress by others
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to juveniles
  • Completes reports of daily activities
  • Picks up and properly disposes of accumulated trash bags
  • Ensures supplies are properly stocked and equipment serviced
  • Travels throughout the Metro service area inspecting bus stops, zones, terminals and supervising work progress of crews
  • Cleans and sweeps bus stops, zones and terminals using high pressure washers
  • Cleans and removes weeds, trash and debris from Metro and other properties
  • Cleans buses at terminals and layover zones
  • Replaces sacrificial bus windows and passenger seat inserts at terminals and layover zones
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, equipment, and safety procedures utilized in cleaning of bus stops and buses
  • Vehicle operation and safety

Ability to:
  • Assist and learn semi-skilled and skilled work performing bus stop maintenance
  • Assign, monitor, and review tasks performed by a non-paid work crew performing bus stop cleaning and other related work
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Safely operate Metro vehicles
  • Safely operate cleaning equipment
  • Maintain simple written records
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 75 pounds

  • Tolerate exposure to noise, unpleasant odors, and outdoor work at night and in all types of weather
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the LABORER "B" position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Must currently be an ATU member and be in an ATU position for a minimum of 1 year
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license

Special Conditions
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
