INVENTORY CONTROL SUPERVISOR
Pay Grade C04

Basic Function
To supervise the activities of Metro’s computerized inventory control functions involving the maintenance of equipment inventory records, and administration of the quality receiving unit.

Examples of Duties
Generic
  • Develops and modifies computerized inventory models to ensure availability of required material and provide accurate forecast capabilities
  • Evaluates material requisitions to determine stocking levels
  • Develops and revises computerized inventory control system requirements
  • Plans and oversees special projects related to control of capital and material inventory; identifies cause of problems
  • Oversees the material planning of Metro bus and rail operations inventory
  • Prepares reports for intra- and inter-departmental consumption
  • Represents department management at meetings with clients and suppliers
  • Develops and delivers informational presentations to various Metro departments
  • Supervises the inspection of inventory items to ensure compliance with established procedures and requirements
  • Supervises analysts in the development and maintenance of the computerized illustrated parts catalog page content linked to inventory databases in support of bus and rail maintenance operations
  • Ensures item catalog update data is communicated to Inventory Control staff
  • Ensures the timely and accurate response to requests for technical assistance from Sector Maintenance Managers, mechanics and other clients
  • Supervises subordinate staff
  • Accounts for subordinate and personal compliance with all of Metro’s safety rules, polices, and procedures
Item Catalog Record Management & Inventory
  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of item catalog records
  • Reviews and approves client requests for new inventory item set ups
  • Ensures requested record updates are processed in a timely and accurate manner
  • Administers a quarterly inventory reclassification project and Order Point Review project
  • Ensures integrity and accuracy of inventory data records
  • Establishes and maintains inventory stocking guidelines
  • Chairs Metro’s Inventory Standards committee
Variance Analysis & Equipment Tracking
  • Oversees equipment inventory program
  • Analyzes monthly material account information for posting to general ledger
  • Administers an annual agency-wide equipment inventory, quarterly random sampling inventory project and ongoing sequential inventory project
  • Processes, compiles, prepares and publishes scheduled and ad hoc departmental reports
  • Analyzes, researches, adjusts and reports inventory variances on a regular basis
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Theories, principles, and practices of quality receiving, inventory control and equipment inventory, procurement, and material requirement planning
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing salvage/surplus disposal and recycling for a public transportation agency
  • Preventative maintenance programs, intervals, requirements and procedures for large transportation vehicles of various original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
  • Vehicle systems, parts and components used on various fleet types and models of large transportation vehicles
  • Development of illustrated part catalog for various transit vehicles
  • Maintaining and updating on-line illustrated parts catalog in an enterprise environment
  • Maintenance and material management systems
  • Personal computer business software applications
  • Principles of supervision

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the INVENTORY CONTROL SUPERVISOR position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree - Business, Public Administration, or other related field
  • 2 years of senior or lead-level experience in a bus or rail maintenance environment of a large public transportation agency using a maintenance and material management system and management report writer in an automated warehouse or inventory control system
  • Experience with Oracle based Maintenance and Material Management system and Crystal management report writer is preferred
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license
  • Experience as outlined above may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis
