Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, reviews the preparation and maintenance of varied departmental records. |
Classification Characteristics
Differs from General Clerk in that General Clerk I reviews the preparation and maintenance of various departmental records, ranging from simple to complicated, and serves as a resource person regarding departmental policies and procedures, while General Clerk maintains varied complicated Metro-wide and departmental records. |

Examples of Duties
- Reviews, maintains, and updates personnel records and processes payroll changes

Reviews daily payroll reports for completeness and accuracy and assists Maintenance Staffing Coordinator in reconciling problems

Calculates final payroll earnings for employees being terminated from service and requests special checks from Accounting Department

Computes State Disability and Workers Compensation benefits, sick pay, vacation pay, and retroactive pay for employees

Types, prints, files, and maintains memos, reports, letters, and other departmental correspondence using a typewriter and/or a personal computer

Prepares bi-weekly paycheck transfer and training lists for employees working out of assigned divisions

Maintains and updates departmental rosters for ATU and TCU employees

Maintains and coordinates master calendar for all time off

Maintains special project and activity logs

Receives, verifies, and files purchase orders and packing slips

Advises other staff on departmental policies and procedures

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- General office practices and procedures

Basic accounting and bookkeeping procedures

Payroll practices and procedures

TCU and ATU labor agreements

Complex recordkeeping

Correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation

Ability to:
- Type 40 net words per minute

Operate a calculator, a personal computer, and a computer terminal

Prepare correspondence and reports, and maintain complex records

File materials alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically

Proofread work and identify errors

Communicate effectively orally and in writing

Follow oral and written instructions

Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the GENERAL CLERK I position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 2 years of experience performing responsible clerical and public contact duties
