Classification Characteristics
Differs from General Clerk II in that General Clerk maintains various complex Metro-wide and departmental records, while General Clerk II maintains complex departmental records. Differs from General Clerk I in that General Clerk maintains compiles Metro-wide and departmental records, while General Clerk I reviews the preparation and maintenance of varied departmental records ranging from routine to complex and serves as a resource regarding departmental policies, procedures, and related matters. |

Examples of Duties
- Maintains and updates complicated documents including personnel files, purchasing records, seniority roster, 3Irs, and other departmental records

Types, prints, and distributes letters, memos, contracts, cards, forms, and reports using a typewriter and/or personal computer

Operates computer terminal to retrieve, enter, and update office records

Verifies purchasing and payroll information for completeness and accuracy and corrects errors

Answers telephone, responds to inquiries, and provides information to Metro representatives, outside vendors, and the general public

Composes routine correspondences in relation to departments practices and procedures; proofreads work

Opens, date stamps, and distributes mail

May take and transcribe dictation

May schedule appointments and act as office receptionist

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- General office practice and procedures

Correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation

Complex record keeping

Ability to:
- Type 40 net words per minute

Prepare reports and correspondence

Operate a calculator

Operate specified word processing equipment and/or personal computer and computer terminal

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the GENERAL CLERK position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 2 years of experience performing responsible clerical and public contact duties

Special Conditions
- Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds may be required for some assignments

Some assignments may require a valid California Class C drivers license
