FACILITIES SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN LEADER
Pay Grade A17

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction, installation, and maintenance procedures relating to mechanical and electrical components and systems of Metro facilities.

Classification Characteristics
Facilities Systems Technician is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Facilities Systems Technician Leader (ATU) in that a Facilities Systems Technician performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction, installation, and maintenance procedures relating to mechanical and electrical components and systems of Metro facilities while a Facilities Systems Technician Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Facilities Systems Technicians and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Facilities Systems Technician Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Differs from Electrician in that Facilities Systems Technician performs electrical and mechanical work associated with facilities and systems, while Electrician performs electrical work on a variety of electrical apparatus. Differs from Property Maintainer in that Facilities Systems Technician performs both electrical and mechanical work associated with facilities and systems, while property maintainer performs maintenance and repair of Metro buildings and machinery not related to electrical work. There is an Facilities System Technician Leader who in addition to the regular Facilities System Technician duties, is responsible for assigning duties and directing employees in the performance of their work under the supervision of his/her immediate supervisor with whom he/she shall consult in all matters affecting such work. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.

Work Environment
In order to achieve Metro’s goals in support of its mission, potential candidates are required to commit and continuously practice and demonstrate the following work values:

Examples of Duties
  • Performs preventive and restorative maintenance of shop and bus servicing equipment and electrical systems, including bus washer systems, fueling stations, and roll-up garage doors using basic tools of mechanical trade
  • Troubleshoots and maintains systems with programmable logic and solid state controllers, including automated storage and retrieval systems, robotic paintings equipment, and heavy equipment hoists
  • Installs and maintains a wide range of electrical apparatus, including electrical circuits, switches, solenoids, control boards, motors, generators, yard lighting, and three-phase industrial systems up to 4800 volts
  • Tests and measures voltage, current and resistance using electrical test instruments
  • Performs design, fabrication, and welding of a variety of parts and equipment
  • Repairs and maintains structural framing of walls, roofs, and stairs; repairs jambs, drop ceilings, drywall and partitions using basic tools of construction trades
  • Troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and construction problems using blueprints, specifications, and schematic diagrams
  • Drives Metro maintenance vehicle to various locations to repair and maintain Metro facilities
  • Leads employees by assigning work and providing training
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Mechanical and electrical design, construction, installation and maintenance practices, procedures, methods, and equipment as found in a manufacturing or maintenance facility environment
  • Basic electrical/ electronic theory
  • Federal, state, and local electrical codes

Ability to:
  • Install, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Troubleshoot and correct equipment problems
  • Safely operate Metro vehicles
  • Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools
  • Read and understand blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Follow instructions
  • Move objects weighing up to 75 pounds
  • Work at heights up to 75 feet
  • Travel to off-site locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the FACILITIES SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN LEADER position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 4 years’ experience performing mechanical and electrical facilities construction and maintenance work on mechanical and hydraulic equipment in a large facility environment; and installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of AC and DC equipment, electric motors and controls, including voltages up to 4800 volts, programmable logic and solid state controllers
  • Completion of 2 years or more full-time training or education in Industrial Technology, Electrical Maintenance, or similar program at a recognized trade school or apprenticeship program may be substituted for 1 year’s experience
  • Valid California Class C driver's license

  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
