DIGITAL SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN
Pay Grade A31

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, installs and maintains advanced computer systems including Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), and other data collection equipment.

Classification Characteristics
Digital Systems Technician is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Digital Systems Technician Leader (ATU) in that a Digital Systems Technician performs installs and maintains advanced computer systems including Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), and other data collection equipment while a Digital Systems Technician Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Digital Systems Technicians and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Digital Systems Technician Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement. Differs from Digital Technician in that Digital Systems Technician installs and maintains complex network equipment in addition to desktop computers and peripherals, while Digital Technician primarily installs and maintains basic desktop computers and peripherals.

Work Environment

Examples of Duties
  • Installs and maintains complex network support equipment including routers, switches, hubs, fiber optics and other specialized LAN/WAN devices in addition to desktop computers and peripherals
  • Resolves problems through configuration changes, hardware replacement or software installation
  • Installs and relocates computers, printers, hubs, routers, switches and related equipment
  • Performs computer upgrades involving memory, disk drives, and other input/output (I/O) devices
  • Performs bench repair of CPU’s, printers, badge readers, and other hardware devices
  • Provides operating instructions and trains users in procedures for hardware and software use
  • Utilizes call tracking database to log all trouble calls, work orders and work performed
  • Creates and updates as-built drawings and other technical documentation
  • Updates database inventory system during new installations and relocations
  • Installs network cabling in walls, ceilings and conduit; installs patch panels, data plugs, jacks, and wall plates
  • Suggests modifications to existing equipment and maintenance procedures
  • Trains and oversees the work of Digital Technicians
  • Leads employees by assigning work and providing training
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Advanced networking technologies including FDDI, IP, SMDS, ATM, Frame Relay, VPN, VDI, etc
  • Network cabling standards
  • Networking equipment such as routers, switches, hubs, fiber-optics and related equipment
  • Network Operating Systems including Windows NT
  • TCP/IP, NetBEUI, IPX, PPP, PPTP, and other routing protocols
  • Desktop computer hardware such as CPU’s, memory, storage devices, printers, modems, scanners and other I/O devices
  • Desktop operating system and application software including WindowsXP, Windows 7, MS Office, Outlook and other business application software
  • Microcomputer and network security concepts including virus protection
  • Digital logic and microprocessor theory
  • Electronics including AC/DC fundamentals and familiarization with applicable test equipment
  • Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations governing copyright laws and information systems for a public agency

Ability to:
  • Install and maintain advanced networking equipment and cabling
  • Install and maintain desktop computer systems at both the hardware and software levels
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Express technical information in a clear and simple way
  • Prepare, interpret and understand detailed software and hardware specifications and instructions
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Work independently with minimum supervision
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the DIGITAL SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • Fours years’ experience performing installation and maintenance of 10/100 Base-T networks employing a Microsoft operating systems
  • Two years’ full-time training or education in Computer Systems or Local Area Networks may be substituted for experience
  • Must possess an A+ Certification and Network+ or similar certification in network systems (LAN/WAN)
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license

Special Conditions
  • Must provide own tools of the trade
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Must be able to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
