Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, types, prints, and maintains complex departmental records.

Classification Characteristics
Differs from Typist Clerk in that Clerk updates and maintains complex departmental records, while Typist Clerk performs routine clerical duties.

Work Environment
In order to achieve Metro’s goals in support of its mission, potential candidates are required to commit and continuously practice and demonstrate the following work values:

Examples of Duties
  • Types, prints, and files reports, letters, memos, and forms using a typewriter or a personal computer
  • Answers telephone calls and inquiries from Metro staff and/or the public regarding departmental policies and procedures and related matters
  • Acts as office receptionist
  • Operates personal computer or computer terminal to enter, revise, and recall information
  • Operates laser printer to produce reports and copy machine to make copies
  • Assembles printouts for review by departmental representatives
  • Checks various documents such as purchase requisitions and purchase orders for completeness and accuracy of information provided
  • Maintains and updates records such as operator restrooms, vendors’ lists, ATU seniority rosters, work status boards, batch reports, purchase orders, and requisitions
  • Composes routine correspondence in relation to assigned tasks and proofreads work
  • Schedules and monitors repairs of equipment by Metro staff or outside vendors
  • Records, tracks, and monitors customer relations complaints requiring replies
  • Opens, date stamps, and distributes mail
  • Monitors and orders office supplies
  • May operate Metro vehicle to pick up and deliver reports and other materials
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • General office practices and procedures
  • Correct English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Complex recordkeeping

Ability to:
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively with others
  • Type 40 net words per minute
  • Prepare correspondence and reports and maintain complex records
  • Operate word processing equipment and/or computer terminal
  • Proofread work and identify errors
  • File materials alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically
  • Deal tactfully and effectively with the public and other Metro staff
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the CLERK position MUST meet the following requirements:

  • 1 year of experience performing clerical and public contact duties

Special Conditions
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds may be required for some assignments
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license may be required for some positions
