MECHANIC "B"

Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, performs basic troubleshooting and preventive and remedial maintenance of transit vehicles; performs other related duties. |
Classification Characteristics
Mechanic B is an Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) journey-level position. It differs from the Mechanic B Leader (ATU) in that a Mechanic B performs basic troubleshooting and preventive and remedial maintenance of transit vehicles while a Mechanic B Leader oversees and coordinates the daily activities of a group of Mechanic Bs and assigns tasks within a work crew. The Mechanic B Leader communicates and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures and maintains accountability for the safety of assigned employees. A Leader receives additional pay for each hour worked as stipulated by the appropriate collective bargaining agreement.
Mechanic "B" is the intermediate classification within the Mechanic career ladder, while Mechanic "A" is the journey-level classification and Mechanic "C" is the entry-level classification within the series. Duties among the three classifications vary according to complexity.
Differs from Property Maintainer in that Mechanic "B" performs preventive and remedial maintenance to buses, and other vehicles, while property Maintainer performs preventive and remedial maintenance to Metro facilities. |

Examples of Duties
- Performs basic diagnosis of coach malfunctions, determines the probable cause, and recommends necessary remedial action to the lead worker of supervisor for prioritization and assignment

Repairs or removes and replaces and replaces dysfunctional components of major coach systems, including, but not limited to, engine, electrical, suspension, fueling, pneumatic and hydraulic systems

Tune engines

Performs regular preventive maintenance inspections of all coach systems, repairs minor problems on the spot and makes written reports to indicate more complex remedial action that is needed

Performs acceptance testing and pre-service preparations to newly acquired coaches

Packs bearings, adjusts and relines brakes

Repairs minor damage to interior or exterior of coach including, but not limited to, torn seats, broken windows and windshields, minor dents, and cosmetic paint damage

Responds to road failure situations

Renders remedial action to return bus to operating division

Disassembles, cleans, inspects, and rebuilds engine systems and their mechanical and electrical components

Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Essential Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, equipment and safety procedures utilized in the maintenance of transit vehicles and all their major systems

Shop math

Vehicle operations and safety

Ability to:
- Troubleshoot, maintain and repair transit vehicles

Safely operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment

Safely operate buses, tow trucks, and other Metro vehicles
-
Lift and move objects weighing up to 80 pounds

Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe

Read, write, speak, and understand English

Minimum Qualifications
Potential candidates interested in the MECHANIC "B" position MUST meet
the following requirements:
- 3 years' experience as a heavy equipment or automotive mechanic, including 6 months as a bus mechanic

Successful completion of a 6-month, full-time training program from an accredited school in automotive/truck maintenance and repair may be substituted for up to 2 years non-bus experience

Current and verifiable full ASE (H) Series Transit Certifications in H1-CNG, H3-Drive Train, H4-Brakes, H5-Suspension/Steering, H6-Electrical/Electronics is desirable

Valid California Class A driver's license

- Must provide own tools of the trade

Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
